Aaron Cowan > This is one of my favorite shots of Kathryn Lake taken during our short one night backpacking trip. I decided (unfortunately probably) to not get up before sunrise. I instead got up about 30 minutes afterwards and quickly got my gear and went out. I determined the previous afternoon that this spot would look good in the morning aside from the dark trees on the left. I particularly like the rocks that can seen the bottom portion of the frame.
Aaron Cowan > Kathryn Lake in the Sawtooth Wilderness. Kathryn Lake has no official trail or any semblance of a trail going to the lake. It was a very arduous seven mile hike with an additional 500 feet of climb that we shouldn't have done since we really didn't know how to get over there (we were hoping to find a trail). I decided to sleep in a little so I missed the best light, but this is one of the best lakes in the Sawtooths. There is a tremendous view of Redfish Creek Canyon from this lake.

Aaron Cowan > Using luminosity masks I've been able to bring out a little more detail in the dark canyon walls and surpress some highlights in the snow and reflection. When I took this shot, I used a circular polarizer but I didn't want to remove the reflection yet I wanted to reveal the creek bed. I found a good compromise and this is the result.
Aaron Cowan > Luminosity masks don't make a huge difference for this picture but I was able to preserve the sun better given it more true orange glow rather than the burnt out disc that my original post shows. When I was shooting the sunset in Crescent City, CA I was using the rock in the left of this frame to block the sun as it was setting. Fortunately I stepped to the side a little and was able to see the sun dip below the horizon. I quickly composed and shot as the sun faded away.

Aaron Cowan > This is the Zig Zag River just west of Mount Hood. There were low clouds this morning which created a very dark feeling to the forest.
